UK ANCESTRY VISA

A work and settlement route for eligible applicants with UK ancestral links.

OVERVIEW

The UK Ancestry route allows eligible Commonwealth citizens and certain British nationality categories, as well as citizens of Zimbabwe, to live and work in the UK where they can prove a qualifying grandparent connection.

The route can be attractive because it does not require employer sponsorship and can lead to settlement after five years if the requirements continue to be met.

ELIGIBILITY

  • Applicant must be aged at least 17 on the date they intend to arrive in the UK.

  • Applicant must be able to work and intend to seek employment or work in the UK.

  • Applicant must be able to maintain and accommodate themselves and any dependants.

  • Applicant must prove a qualifying grandparent connection.

GRANDPARENT REQUIREMENT

The applicant must show that one grandparent was born in the UK, the Channel Islands, the Isle of Man, or in what is now Ireland before 31 March 1922. Evidence can be more complex where records are old, names have changed, or family documents are incomplete.

  • Birth certificates linking each generation.

  • Marriage or adoption documents where surnames or legal relationships changed.

  • Evidence that the ancestry link is biological or legally recognised.

  • The route cannot normally be claimed through a step-parent connection.

SETTLEMENT PLANNING

UK Ancestry visa holders may be able to apply for ILR after five continuous years. Applicants should monitor absences, maintain evidence of work or intention to work, and keep financial and residence documents throughout the route.

  • Continuous residence and absences should be monitored.

  • Evidence of work, job search, self-employment or business activity may be relevant.

  • Dependants may also need route-specific planning.

  • British citizenship may be possible after ILR if nationality requirements are met.
